Starter Motor Test Rig

The objective of the test rig is to conduct routine performance tests on the starter motor and to monitor the air pressure drop across the starter motors.

The test rig is specially designed for routine testing of Aircraft Starter under specified operating conditions of loading and cooling.

The test bench will have the following facilities:

  • Easy and quick mounting and coupling of Starter motor to loading device
  • Blast air-cooling with flow control adjustment to provide the specified pressure needed for the airflow through the Starter under test
  • Facility to monitor the differential pressure across the test unit
  • Facility for artificial loading of Starter motor to desired loading values and to monitor, braking torque, operating speed and starter

Test Set-up

Structure:

The mounting structure shall be self standing, floor mounted type designed for adequate anti-vibration measures to accommodate starter motor under test, loading device, torque, speed transducer, transmission arrangement between the powder dynamometer and the starter motor. The starter motor shall be mounted on specially designed mounting fixture.

Starter Motor Mounting:

A special mechanical quick mounting arrangement is provided for easy clamping / de-clamping and coupling of starter motor. The coupling of the Starter motor shall be through a compatible spline joint specially designed to transmit the rated torque.

Air Cooling:

A centrifugal blower with adjustable damper provides the needed airflow at specified air pressure. Facility shall be provided to monitor the differential air pressure across the starter motor.

Loading Device:

Based on the application requirements, the loading device can be an eddy current dynamometer or a powder dynamometer. The dynamometer shall be rated for continuous duty operation at the desired speed, torque and power. The braking torque developed will be smooth and infinitely adjustable. The braking torque can also be remotely adjusted.

Speed sensing:

A proximity sensor, an integral part of the dynamometer, will measure the test speed.

Torque sensing:

Either by reaction type torque sensor (integral to the dynamometer), or by in -line brush less rotating torque sensor. Site calibration of the torque sensor is possible.

TopDC Regulated Power Supply:

The variable DC power supply shall be rated for the starter motor voltage and current specifications.

Control Unit:

The control unit located on top of the test rig carries all the operator controls, digital indicators and dynamometer controller. The required braking torque can be adjusted either by the torque setting potentiometer or by external 0-10 V DC. The control unit is a closed loop torque controller with adjustable P, I controls.

Data Acquisition System:

The PC-based data acquisition system will include a PC console, high speed data acquisition hardware and application specific data acquisition software developed on Lab VIEW graphical programming system. The system loads the starter motor from no-load to stall condition in a pre-set time. The PC system shall acquire instantaneous signals corresponding to the desired starter motor parameters. These signals can be tabulated for evaluation and to plot the characteristics.
